New Member Welcome

TWNA now has over 150 members. We hit the 151 mark with the addition of Jeff Barker, a member of the Land Line family. Our warmest welcome to Jeff!

TWNA @ MATS

Yes, it’s that time of the year once again: the Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS) is just around the corner. Besides the usual (and numerous) press events, MATS 2007 will also be a very good opportunity for TWNA members to gather at the annual meeting, not to mention the Communication Awards banquet that promises to be a huge success this year again.

Banquet
Sponsors have responded very positively, the number of entries for the Communication Awards is more than satisfying, and the forecasted attendance all point to say we have a winning formula with our annual banquet. Tickets are still available for $60.00 each, or $450.00 per table (8 seats). Press attendees who purchase tickets will receive a complimentary renewal/new-membership at the individual press member level. To reserve your seats: admin@twna.org.

Annual Meeting
Still, TWNA at MATS is more than the banquet. For many years, Louisville has been the gathering point for our annual meeting and every member is invited to participate at this yearly event (bring a new member with you!) during which you will have the opportunity to see what your association is doing for you but also to raise issues you think should be discussed by the group. We look forward to seeing you there!

Road-Test “How-To” Seminar
Prior to the annual business meeting at MATS, TWNA will host a seminar presented by a renowned expert from General Motors. This workshop is a “how-to” guide to evaluate a truck when doing a road-test. Think you’ve been there and done that? Think again. Experienced trucking editors have had the opportunity to listen to this expert in the recent past and all said they learned a lot. Don’t miss this free ability-improvement opportunity!

HDMA Breakfast & Briefing @ MATS
Just a reminder, HDMA has set aside two complimentary tables available to TWNA Press Members at the Breakfast & Briefing on Friday, March 23. Chris Patterson of Freightliner is the speaker. The doors will open at 7 a.m., and Chris will start speaking at 8 a.m. To RSVP, contact Margaret Beck, Senior Director of Communications, Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association, Phone: 919-406-8828, Cell: 919-345-5371, or mbeck@mema.org via e-mail.

Trucking Terms Glossary Coming Soon

TWNA wishes to commend all the work and efforts that the Glossary Committee members, namely Sherry White, David Kolman, Bette Garber, Roxane Rose with the help of Paul Abelson, have put forward in order to update this precious document.

For those who might not be familiar with it, TWNA’s Glossary of trucking terms is a dictionary in which a new comer to the trucking industry (or a journalist from the mainstream media) can find quick and accurate answers when looking for a particular expression related to trucking. This tool is helpful and contributes to enhance the quality of communication within the industry, as well as between the industry and the general public.

Marketing Initiative & Canadian Exposure

TWNA continues to work on increasing its membership, especially in the Associate Member segments. The marketing committee, piloted by Derek Smith, has prepared a promotional tool which takes the form of a postcard that explains marketing and PR professionals the numerous advantages of being part of TWNA, the ease of “Meeting the press” being one of them. These will be distributed to the exhibitors of the Mid-America Trucking Show and sent to prospective members.

There is more exposure coming for TWNA, and this time it will come from Canada. The TWNA Board of Directors agreed, at its last meeting, to do a re-run of the Technical Achievement Award ceremony at the “CAM-Logique” trucking and logistics trade show that will be held in Montreal this April. Even though this year’s recipient is already known, it appears to be very good idea to recognize the efforts of those involved in innovative companies, even when they are based north of the U.S. border. The ceremony will also be an ideal occasion to present to the Canadian attendance (hundreds of persons will attend the Montreal banquet) what TWNA is and what it can do for Canadian companies. A Canadian first !

Obituary - Gary Macklin

Gary L Macklin, editor-in-chief of Refrigerated Transporter, died unexpectedly at his Houston home February 16.

Gary dedicated his entire career to the refrigerated transportation industry. He began writing for the magazine in 1972 and was appointed editor in 1973. Of the 42 years that Refrigerated Transporter has existed as a magazine, he was editor for 34 of them.

Ownership of the magazine changed over the years, but Gary was always there, covering industry meetings, visiting refrigerated fleets, and writing about new equipment. He was an active participant in industry associations, appearing on their programs as well as reporting on those meetings. Whether the magazine was owned by Tunnell Publications, Intertec, Primedia, or Prism Business Media, Gary remained at the helm of Refrigerated Transporter, providing information that he felt would impact his readers.

Prior to joining Tunnell Publications (Refrigerated Transporter's original publisher), Gary served as an officer with the US Army Field Artillery at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

He earned degrees in English and history from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas, including graduate study in British literature and the history of Eastern Europe. He completed his BA degrees in 1967 and continued his studies until entering military service in 1970.

He is survived by his wife, Sally; two daughters, Katharine Macklin Day and Elizabeth Macklin; son-in-law Jason Day; and grandchildren Rebekah, Joshua, and Nathaniel Day.

Randall-Reilly Buys Kona Communications

Randall-Reilly Publishing recently announced the purchase of Deerfield, Illinois-based Kona Communications, a 37-year-old, privately held publisher with properties in trucking distribution and the aftermarket. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The acquisition adds Truck Parts and Service and Successful Dealer magazines to Randall-Reilly’s impressive list of holdings in the trucking industry, which includes Commercial Carrier Journal, Overdrive, Truckers News, Trañsportista (formerly Truckers News en Español), NextTruck and the Great American Trucking Show. The company’s properties now cover virtually all aspects of the trucking market, including fleets; owner-operators; new, used and leased truck purchases; driver recruitment; and vehicle sales, maintenance and repair.

“Truck Parts and Service and Successful Dealer are leaders in the markets they serve, making them an excellent fit with our existing properties,” says Mike Reilly, Randall-Reilly president and CEO. “This acquisition furthers our goal of offering trucking industry suppliers a property to meet each of their marketing needs.”

Kona’s founder, President and CEO Jim Moss, will remain with the magazines in an advisory role throughout the transition period. “I am most pleased that our properties have found a home in the heart of the trucking industry,” Moss says. “Randall-Reilly is the most complete provider of information services to our industry, and Mike Reilly and I have agreed on an aggressive, forward looking game plan which will lead to increased market presence for both of our books.”

Randall-Reilly Publishing will retain Kona Communications’ existing offices in Deerfield, Illinois.
