Board Nominations & Online Voting
There are five board positions -- Press Directorships for Midwest, Northeast, Southeast and West, as well as the Agency PR Directorship. The Press Director terms will run from 1/1/07 to 12/31/08. As a reminder, the Agency PR Directorship will have a one-time abbreviated term, from 1/1/07 to 12/31/07, to facilitate the realignment of our Press and Associate elections.

If you are interested in running for one of these positions, please submit a short bio/campaign statement to Tom Kelley by no later than October 16. Balloting will be done via the Internet. Members who are eligible to vote will be sent information on how to do so in mid-October.

TWNA Communications Awards
If you have not done so already please go to the TWNA web site and download the application for the 2006 TWNA Communications Awards.

The awards are open to both the press and marketing/public relations sides of the trucking industry. Writing, graphics, broadcast, websites and internal communications are just a few of the categories included in the awards program.

Everything from feature articles, to press kits, to marketing brochures, to magazine redesigns, are included in the scope of the program. Advertising is the only area of communications that is not included.
Publishers are encouraged to submit entries on behalf of their staff and freelance writers, photographers, and graphic artists. Freelancers can submit their own work if not submitted by the publisher.

The award program is being administered by Walter Haessner, founder of the International Automotive Media Awards. The entries will be peer-judged against a standard scale. The fee for each entry is $65.00 US. Entries must be received by Dec. 8, 2006.

Entries may be submitted in English, French or Spanish. Material may be entered that has been published and has a cover or air date between Nov. 1, 2005 and Oct. 31, 2006. Example: A November 2006 cover date is not eligible this year, even if the "on sale" date was Oct. 31st or earlier.

Additional Comm Award Judges Needed!
By Walter Haessner - TWNA Comm Award Administrator
Will you help? Most of you are qualified, but many are intimidated by the idea of judging others' work. This is a peer-judged program; your participation is needed.

What is required? You will be sent several entries in your particular area of expertise/ experience, together with judging forms to fill in for each entry, and "Judges Notes" to assist you through the process. You will have at least four weeks in which to judge.

Judges are needed in all areas of truck media: magazine, book, television, video, PR, graphic design, photography, web and radio. If you can judge in another language, particularly French, German, or Spanish, please indicate. To volunteer, send a note to iama0@earthlink.net via e-mail

HDAW Update
The sponsors of Heavy Duty Aftermarket Week (HDAW) still are interested in having TWNA participate in the meeting which will be in Las Vegas in January.

Tim Kraus, executive director Heavy Duty Manufacturers Association, one of HDAW's sponsors, will discuss options for TWNA's participation at that meeting.

One idea is to have a "Meet The Press" type cocktail reception where TWNA member organizations could have their media kits and sample copies of their magazines available and get a chance to meet HDAW exhibitors.

TWNA.ORG Resource Area
As many of you may already know, the TWNA website has an extensive resource section with guidelines, surveys, tips and tricks to help make our members' jobs just a bit easier. At the recent GATS meeting, we renewed the practice of conducting media seminars to further our goal of improving communications within the industry. During the meeting, we discussed the need to update and expand the resource portion of the website, including the posting of the seminar presentations online.

If any TWNA member has, or would like to create, a "communications/media how-to" item that might be appropriate for the resource area, please submit it to TWNA webmaster Tom Kelley before the end of the year.

Resource items can be as simple as a short essay on the importance of RSVP'ing for a press event, or as complex as how to set up a Podcast, and can be written from either a press perspective, or a media relations perspective.
