State
of TWNA
There currently are 144 members in TWNA. Our finances are in
good order and about 75% of the sponsorship for the banquet
has been secured.
Banquet Update
David Kolman, Don Alles and SherryWhite are working on a template
for the awards presentation to help ensure that things run more
smoothly. Thanks to them for their efforts.
TWNA Glossary of Trucking Terms
As was noted in the January newsletter, TWNA is in the process
of updating its Glossary of Trucking Terms. A committee has
been created specifically for this purpose.
Sadly, not many members
have heeded the call for help with this project. So once again,
the committee is asking for your help and input
Please review the
Trucking Terms portion of the Glossary. It can be found on-line
at: twna.org/glossary.htm. Are the current definitions correct?
What terms should be added? Do you have any suggestions for
improving the glossary?
E-mail your changes,
suggestions, etc., to Roxane Campbell Rose, committee chair,
at: roxane@roxaneinc.com. Deadline for submissions is February
16, 2006.
The committee is
also seeking sponsors to help TWNA produce a hard copy of the
Glossary. Any parties interested should also contact Roxane
by e-mail or by phone at: (706) 367-7761.
Not-For-Profit
Status
Tom Kelley has begun the process of obtaining TWNA's 501C(6)
designation. We have run into a few glitches and are working
on sorting them out. We still hope to have our not-for-profit
status by this summer.
TWNA & HDAW
There was an informal TWNA meeting at Heavy Duty Aftermarket
Week. Approximately 18 press people attended the event. TWNA
is looking at working more closely with HDAW in the future.
A subcommittee is being formed (Tom Kelley, Susan Fall, Sherry
White, Sandi Soendker) to look into ways TWNA can be active
at HDAW.

From The Chair
The TWNA board and various committee members are continuing
to work on a variety of TWNA projects from updating the glossary
to working on a scholarship form, to planning the banquet. We
are trying to keep TWNA growing and taking on new projects.
While the board is comprised of some very talented people, I
say the more the merrier and so I welcome each of you to contact
me with your ideas on the types of projects you would like to
see TWNA undertake in the near future. Call me at 847-498-3180
or e-mail me at denise@konacommunications.com. I'd love to hear
your ideas for making TWNA an even better organization.

KOLMAN'S KORNER
Who
Knew?
In going through
my many accumulated piles of paper, I happened upon some interesting
facts and statistics. Did you know that:
- New Jersey was
the first state in the nation to officially classify "sleep-deprived
driving" - defined as driving without sleeping in more
than 24 hours - as reckless driving. Punishment is a fine and,
potentially, a prison term.
- 71% of business
managers admit to having fallen asleep or getting a case of
the nods during a presentation.
- More motorists
than ever are using cellular phones while they drive. At any
given daylight moment, an estimated 8% (1.2 million) of U.S.
drivers were using cell phones (both hand-held and hands-free)
while operating their vehicles.
- The most common
form of debris littering roadways are: in order: tire treads,
garbage from waste haulers, lumber and construction materials,
gravel, soil and tree limbs, muffler and exhaust parts.
- The average person
generates 73.5 pounds of glass container waste per year.
- The first stall
in a truckstop, travel plaza or rest area bathroom is usually
the cleanest. That's because most people, seeking privacy, skip
the first stall.
And I've been wondering,
what if the hokey-pokey is not what it's all about?
